Bioswale Demonstration Project
Did you notice the new garden along Poinciana Drive?
In the spring of 2025, the Garden Club partnered with Town staff to create a Bioswale Demonstration Project near the tennis courts, an area prone to flooding after heavy rain.
A bioswale is a planted drainage depression that filters rain and roadway runoff before it enters the aquifer.
Together we:
Planted 70 native species that tolerate wet conditions
Improved stormwater filtration
Helped protect local water quality
Enhanced the town’s green infrastructure
This project is one of many celebrating our 70th year of service.

Conservation & Civic Beautification
Our Conservation & Civic Beautification efforts reflect the LBTS Garden Club's commitment to preserving the natural beauty of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and our surroundings. Through community partnerships and hands-on projects, we enhance public spaces and support sustainability.
Each year, our Annual Arbor Day Tree Planting brings members together to plant trees for future generations while helping support the Town's designation as a Tree City USA community. We also sponsor beautification projects such as orchid walks, July 4th displays, educational sessions and field trips that promote civic landscaping projects and help maintain and beautify shared spaces that define our seaside village.
These efforts help keep our town vibrant, welcoming, and environmentally strong for years to come.
Bee Apiary
To help boost the nation’s declining bee populations, the Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea started its own urban apiary in December 2019. LBTS is now responsible for managing the Town’s Micro-Apiary at 4505 N. Ocean Drive, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, FL 33308.
This initiative supports pollinator health, environmental stewardship, and community education. Funding supports shared protective beekeeping equipment, hive maintenance supplies, seasonal hive health monitoring and mite treatment, and educational signage and outreach materials. Our trained volunteers maintain the apiary following sustainable beekeeping and public safety best practices.

Butterflies-By-The-Sea
As development increases in Broward County, natural habitat for native plants, butterflies, birds, and other wildlife continues to decline. The Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea launched the Butterflies-By-The-Sea program in 2018 to encourage residents and businesses to help support pollinators by planting butterfly-friendly gardens.
Residents can create a NatureScape butterfly garden at their home, condominium, townhouse, or business using native plants that provide food and habitat for butterflies and other pollinators. Gardens may also be registered with the National Wildlife Federation as part of broader efforts to support certified wildlife habitats.
Elements of a Butterfly Garden
Food: Native nectar and host plants such as milkweed and lantana
Water: A birdbath or shallow water source
